Mexico

The United Mexican States are situated in North America. It shares its border with the United States to the north, the North Pacific Ocean to the south and west, Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, and the Gulf of Mexico to the east. The capital Mexico City(19 26 N, 99 08 W) is the world’s most populous city. It is the 5th largest country in America and 14th largest in the world. It is most populous Spanish speaking country.


HISTORY:- The civilization of  Mesoamerica, in the valley of Mexico was invaded by the Spanish power in 1519. On 16th September, 1810, Priest Miguel Hidalgo Costilla declared independence from Spain. That resulted into a war, which set up the foundation stone of the First Mexican Empire in 1821. Agustín de Iturbide became the first emperor. In 1824, the republican army overthrew the emperor and created the United Mexican states. Guadalupe Victoria became the first President. General Antonio López de Santa Anna imposed centralized government. Having discarded 1924 constitution, civil war started across the country. Three new governments came of-the Republic of Texas, the Republic of the Rio Grande and the Republic of Yucatán. US invasion to Texas led to the Mexican-American War. Mexico was overpowered and lost Texas. Freedom of religion was introduced. In 1860s, France occupied the country and crowned  Habsburg Archduke of Austria as Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. In 1867 the republic was reestablished when the second Mexican Empire was dethroned.

 

GEOGRAPHY:- Mexico’s geographic coordination is 23 00 N, 102 00 W. The total area of the country spreads across 1,972,550 sq km (land-1,923,040 sq km, water-49,510 sq km) which makes it 14th largest country in the world. The coastline is 9,330 km long along with the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the North Pacific Ocean. Mexico’s lowest point is Laguna Salada (-10 m).And highest point is Volcan Pico de Orizaba (5,700 m). Mexico is mainly formed of high and complex mountains. The country is crossed north to south by Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental.Coastal plains are formed of low land. Central Plateau is high.

 

CLIMATE:- The Tropic of Cancer has divided Mexico into temperate and tropical regions. Although at an average,it varies from tropical to desert. It has cooler winters and temperate summers.

 

GOVERNMENT:- The United Mexican States are Federal presidential republic. The federal government of Mexico is representative, democratic and republican. The constitution has been adopted on 5th February,1917. The three branches which form the government are

1.Executive branch:- This comprises the president (chief of state and head of government), commander in chief, and cabinet.

2.Legislative branch:- This comprises bicameral National Congress, which is composed of Senate (128 seats) and a Chamber of Deputies (500 seats).

3.Judicial branch:-This comprises the Supreme Court, composed of 11 judges, and other small local and federal courts.

The most prominent political parties are Institutional Revolutionary Party, National Action Party, Party of the Democratic Revolution, Green Ecological Party, Labor Party. Suffrage is universal above 18. 16th September, the Independence Day of Mexico is celebrated as National holiday.

ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS:- The United Mexican States are a federation of 31 states and a federal district.

 

CULTURE:- In every sphere of culture, Mexico set a unique style. Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo, and Juan O'Gorman are famous Mexican artists. Diego Rivera painted the Man at the Crossroads. Manuel M. Ponce, Mario Lavista, Silvestre Revueltas are some of the well known music composers of Mexico. Among the famous Mexican authors Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Rulfo, Elena Poniatowska, and José Emilio Pacheco are appraised worldwide. Octavio Paz has won the Nobel Prize. Mexican cuisine has recognized globally for its colour, taste, decoration and spices. Chocolate, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos have gained international appraisal. During 1940s and 1950s, Mexican film industry had observed its Golden Era. Mexico’s most popular sports are football and Baseball.

 

ECONOMY:- Mexico supports free market economy. The economy of the country is a fusion of industrialization and agriculture. The economy is dominated by private sector. According to World Tourism Organization, Mexico is one of the most favourite places of the tourists around the world. It is the 12th largest economy in the world in GDP. According to the World Bank, it has the highest Gross National Income per capita among Latin American countries.

Industries: food and beverages, tobacco, chemicals, iron and steel, petroleum, mining, textiles, clothing, motor vehicles, consumer durables, tourism.

Natural resources: petroleum, silver, copper, gold, lead, zinc, natural gas, timber.

Exports: $267.5 billion f.o.b. (2007 est.): manufactured goods, oil and oil products, silver, fruits, vegetables, coffee, cotton.

Imports: $279.3 billion f.o.b. (2007 est.): metalworking machines, steel mill products, agricultural machinery, electrical equipment, car parts, repair parts, aircraft, and aircraft parts.

LANGUAGE:-  There is no official language in Mexico. The national language is Spanish (de facto), while 62 Indigenous Amerindian languages are also used.

 

CITIES:-  The largest city is capital Mexico City. Other large cities are Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Acapulco, Merida, Leon, Veracruz, Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec.

 

POPULATION:- It is 11th most populous country with a growth rate of 1.2%.
